With all the possible diets out there, sometimes it is hard to know which one to choose in order to lose weight the most effectively. Websites and commercials scream at potential dieters to cut calories, cut fat, ban carbohydrates and lose the sugar. One professional, however, recommends a simpler approach: eating for your blood type.

The Blood Type Diet was created by Dr. Peter D’Adamo and professes that all a person must do in order to lose weight and keep it off is to start eating for your blood type. Once food enters the system, Lectins in the food affect the blood. When those Lectins do not work well with the person’s blood type, blood cells begin to collect in a mass in certain parts of the body. Eating for your blood type keeps those masses from forming and causing problems with a person’s overall health.

While Lectins do not cause irreparable harm, they can cause many other problems if the ones consumed are not compatible with a person’s blood type. In fact, the majority of the Lectins consumed in food every day are never absorbed by the body; however, the 5 percent that remain can cause weight gain and retention. According to the Blood Type Diet, the antigens in each blood type work better with some foods than others, and eating for your blood type can help the body become healthier.

The four blood types are Types O, A, B and AB. According to Dr. D’Adamo and the Blood Type Diet, people with Type O blood do best with plenty of physical activity and diets high in protein. He recommends that those with Type O blood eat fewer breads, grains and beans, since gluten slows down their metabolism. Beans harm the Type O person by causing Lectins to settle in the tissue of muscles, making them less efficient. Finally, Type O people are told to avoid cabbage, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts and other similar vegetables that are known to slow thyroid function.

Type A people fare the best as vegetarians, though some meat is recommended. The Blood Type Diet allows these people plenty of vegetables, seafood, beans, grains, vegetables and legumes. They should avoid most other meats, as well as dairy products, wheat, most fruits and both kidney and lima beans. Four foods that Dr. D’Adamo says a Type A person should consume in order to help with weight loss are those containing soy, as well as pineapple and vegetable oil.

In order for a Type B person to eat right for your blood type, they should consume a balanced mixture of meats and vegetables, with some limitations. Meats other than chicken are allowed by the diet, as are fruits, vegetables, beans, grains, dairy products and legumes. Foods like corn, lentils, sesame oil and seeds, wheat and peanuts can stall weight loss efforts and should be avoided, while proponents of weight loss for Type B people include greens, venison, liver, eggs, wheat and different types of tea.

Finally there is Type AB. These people are the least restricted when trying to eat right for your blood type in that they are allowed a moderate mixture of all types of foods. They are asked to avoid eating too much red meat, corn, seeds and lima and kidney beans, while they are encouraged to consume plenty of pineapple, kelp, dairy, seafood, tofu and greens to help meet their weight loss goals.

Using the Blood Type Diet and following its guidelines, it is not hard to eat right for your blood type. The weight loss program is lauded by many, but should be thoroughly researched before it is undertaken. Talk to a doctor about whether or not to eat right for your blood type before starting the diet, just as is recommended before any major dietary change.
